After you have your dental implants placed, you will need to take some time to recover. The posts will need to fuse to your jawbone properly, so your dentist will give you instructions that you will need to follow. It’ll have things that you should do, like proper oral hygiene. However, there are also plenty of things that you shouldn’t do. Here are four of the latter to help ensure you have a successful treatment.
1.) Eat Certain Foods
As you are recovering from your implant surgery, you’ll have to adjust your meals. There are ones that’ll be gentle on your mouth and others that might cause some problems. For instance, anything hard and hot can affect how you heal. You should rather stick to soft, easy-to-chew options to help give your teeth the break that they need.
2.) Drink From a Straw
When you drink through a straw, you are able to use it due to suction. It can help you enjoy your beverage, but you might want to avoid using this handy utensil after your procedure. A blood clot forms over the implant site, which helps keep the area clean. However, the sucking motion from using a straw can dislodge it, which can lead to dry socket. This condition often causes severe discomfort.
3.) Smoke or Chew Tobacco
Using tobacco can be harmful to your mouth in how it heals. It increases your risk for gum disease while also slowing down how fast you recover. However, one serious effect it can have is affecting osseointegration. This process is the fusion of your jawbone to the post. If it becomes impacted, then your implant may become wobbly or feel loose.
4.) Intense Exercise
If you undergo any procedure, then you deserve to get plenty of rest as well! The same thing applies to implant surgery. You need to take plenty of time for yourself. Strenuous physical activity, like jogging or heavy lifting, gets your heart pumping. While this can be good for your overall health, the increase in blood flow isn’t the best while you are recovering. It can make the implant site bleed, so wait at least a week afterward until you enjoy a hard work out.
You should look forward to enjoying your dental implants. By making sure you don’t do the four things above, you can increase your odds of having a successful treatment. That way, your restored smile stays strong and reliable for a lifetime.
