Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

With dental insurance, you pay a monthly premium for your provider to pay for a percentage of your dental care. This is similar to regular health insurance, but dental insurance is structured slightly differently so that it can focus on prevention, meaning it mainly helps pay for services that are meant to stop problems from happening in the first place. There is still coverage for emergencies, but checkups and cleanings are usually more covered than emergency care.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Dental insurance coverage forms

Most dental insurance plans categorize treatments in several different ways, and each category gets a different level of coverage. Preventive care (checkups, cleanings, X-rays) is typically mostly or completely covered. Restorative care (fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, and so on) can have anywhere from 50% coverage to 80% coverage depending on how extensive the treatment is considered to be. Cosmetic services usually aren’t covered at all. You can confirm the specifics of your own plan by calling your insurance company.

Our In-Network Dental Insurance Providers

We are in-network with Ameritas, Aetna, and several other popular dental insurance plans. This means that we have come to an agreement with these service providers where we offer our services at a reduced fee. This allows patients to save hundreds (or sometimes even thousands) of dollars in dental care. You can call our dental office to see if we’re in-network with your provider. Even if we’re out of network, we likely still take your plan and can file claims on your behalf.
